UV and your Eyes
Your eyes need to be protected from the damaging ray of the sun. Exposure to UV light is cumulative and raises the risks of eye diseases and tissue damage.
Ultraviolet light is a type of radiation which reaches the earth. UV light is measured in wavelengths called nanometers (nm), which appear between 200 and 400 nm on the light spectrum. They are broken down in the following manner:
UVA 190 – 289 nm – this is absorbed by the earth’s ozone layer and normally doesn’t reach us. There is widespread global concern over the effects of harmful UVA light with depletion of the earth’s protective ozone layer.
UV B 290 – 314 nm – affects the cornea of the eye causing burns of varying degrees, from varying feel of burning, stinging and headaches to temporary vision loss (snowblindness). Over time these conditions can lead to disorders such as pteryium, pingueculum and skin cancer around the eye.
UVC 315-180 nm – affects the lens and the corneas of the eye. Although both parts naturally absorb UV light in moderate measures to help protect the retina, the effects of this UV can still lead to Macular Degeneraqtion and permanent blindness. Unfortunately, damage from UVC is not reversible.
UV protection can be added to most optical lenses, even if they have no tint.
Polarized Protection
Polarized is a film laminated between two layers of lens, rendering the lens material more brittle than regular lenses. Polarized lenses have the ability to reduce both direct and indirect light rays that bounce off flat, reflective surfaces, allowing excellent clarity on water, through a wind shield. They reduce glare on snow and pavement and can host UV filter, along with other protective coatings.
Maui Jim, a leading manufacturer in polarized lenses, offers exceptional lens technology with seven coating layers designed to optimal clarity.
Polarization is available in standard gray, brown, green, and with over 10 fashion hues available in Essilor’s “Xperio” polarized lenses.
